Music
A Small Congregation… with a Big Voice!
We have a wonderful acoustical space, and music plays a large role in our Sunday services. Through music, everyone participates in the service.
We find that all music has spiritual elements. You will enjoy a wide variety of musical styles including popular, folk, jazz, classical, spirituals, gospel, world music, and works with lyrics about our UU faith.
We would love to hear from you if you sing or play a musical instrument, have had some performing experience, and would like to participate in our service.
Choir
Anyone who loves to sing and is willing to attend weekly choir practice and to work on the music is welcome to join the choir. There are no tryouts.
The choir rehearses each Thursday evening, September to early June, from 5:30-7:00pm. The choir sings at Sunday services approximately once a month, sharing special music and leading the congregation in singing hymns. Sometimes ensembles from the choir may sing for services on other Sundays.
We are always welcoming new members to join the choir—it is a fun and meaningful way to be part of the HUUC community.
Concerts & Coffeehouses
Our church is a venue for a variety of concerts by professional musicians.
We also regularly schedule coffeehouses (open mic nights) at the church, which are well attended and bring people together to enjoy music, poetry, stories, and laughter while building a sense of community.
Friends and members of HUUC frequently gather to pursue interests which they share.
Support
Caring Ministry is the para-pastoral committee which assists the minister and serves the congregation by reaching out to those in need. We will make phone calls, visits and send cards to those who are house-bound or in hospital, provide transportation to appointments, run errands, deliver a hot dish or meal. We will also serve as advocates for those who need other types of assistance. We help to set up and organize food contributions for special occasions such as farewell gatherings or memorial services; every six weeks we take a turn making coffee and providing light refreshments for the social gathering after the Sunday service. For the past four years we have taken up a collection at the holidays to provide gift cards to anonymous recipients within our own congregation. We try to gather the dates of birthdays and anniversaries of our congregants for publication in the Newsletter. Recently the
Caring Ministry has joined to form a single committee with the Membership Committee.
Membership Committee
Meat ‘n Potatas and its sister organization, Tofu ‘n Tomatoes are dining groups for men and women, respectively. Each meets once a month for dinner in a local restaurant. The purpose is a social evening with UU friends. The venue changes monthly at the discretion of those in attendance. Information regarding dates, times and location is published in the newsletter.
The Humanist group meets monthly to participate in discussions pertaining to issues of the natural world. We are primarily atheistically oriented and science minded.
“Co Knittee” is a group that enjoys crafts and needlework. They meet to work on personal projects as well as to create items for donation to non profit groups in the community. As a “Non-Committee” there is no agenda during the meetings. Group efforts include patchwork afghans to warm those in local nursing facilities. Meetings are usually held on Saturdays.
